Two Delta flight attendants failed a breathalyzer before an international flight from Amsterdam to New York’s JFK International Airport.
The crew members — one male and one female — were removed from the flight and fined on Friday morning, according to the airline and Dutch police.
According to Dutch laws, flight crew are not allowed to consume alcohol 10 hours before a trip.
The female flight attendant was seven times over the legal limit and fined 1,900 euros (roughly $2,000), police said. The male flight attendant was fined €275 (about $290) for being 0.02 over the limit.
Another female flight attendant from a different airline was fined €1,800 (around $1,900) for being 6.5 times over the limit. The three were flagged during a three-hour window where police screened 445 pilots and flight attendants at Schiphol Airport, according to AviationA2Z.
“Delta’s alcohol policy is among the strictest in the industry and we have no tolerance for violation,” Delta Air Lines said in a statement.
AviationA2Z reported the flight was only delayed 20 minutes before departing and arrived stateside ahead of schedule.
The two were suspended and may ultimately be fired, according to travel news site PYOK.
In March 2024, Lawrence Russell, a Delta pilot, was sentenced to 10 months in a UK prison after showing up intoxicated before a flight from Edinburgh to JFK.
